John Proios is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Chicago. He specializes in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, particularly Plato’s late metaphysics, epistemology, and logic, with a focus on dialogues like the Philebus, Sophist, and Statesman. His research integrates feminist, Marxist, and critical social theories to analyze ancient thought, including projects on cognitive liberation in Plato and ancient Greek philosophy of race. He holds a PhD from Cornell University (2021), an MA from the University of Arizona (2017), and a BA from Swarthmore College (2015).
Proios teaches courses on ancient philosophy, the philosophy of life and death, and interdisciplinary topics like liberation and enlightenment. His recent work explores the intersection of philosophy with social justice, including how marginalized thinkers navigate academic spaces. Notable publications include analyses of Plato’s methodological critiques of hedonism and proto-racial concepts in ancient texts.
He currently collaborates on a project examining ancient Greek philosophy of race and contributes to debates on natural kinds and ethical narratives. His research emphasizes bridging ancient philosophy with contemporary social theory, reflecting his commitment to critical engagement with historical texts.
