Jonny Thakkar is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Swarthmore College and co-founder of The Point, a journal of philosophical essays. His primary research focuses on the intersection of ancient Greek philosophy (particularly Plato) with modern political theory, including socialism and liberal democracy. Key projects include Plato as Critical Theorist (HUP, 2018), which reinterprets Plato’s political thought as foundational for critical theory, and ongoing work on socialism as a normative ideal.
Education: Undergraduate studies at New College, Oxford. Academic affiliations include teaching roles at Swarthmore, UBC, Princeton, and Chicago, with courses on ancient political thought, ethics, and modern political theory.
Research interests span Plato’s metaphysics and political power, social ontology, and the role of imagination in shaping societies. He bridges classical philosophy with contemporary debates through essays published in venues like the European Journal of Philosophy and Los Angeles Review of Books.
Publications include articles on privatization, Aristotelian ethics, and the legacy of utopian socialism. His editorial work at The Point emphasizes philosophical engagement with modern life in the tradition of Montaigne.
