Jyl Gentzler is a Professor of Philosophy at Amherst College, specializing in Ancient Philosophy with a focus on Plato and Aristotle. Her research explores the nature of philosophical inquiry, Socratic dialectic, and ethical questions rooted in classical thought. She teaches courses ranging from introductory philosophy to advanced topics in Ancient Philosophy, Ethics, and Political Philosophy.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Philosophy from Cornell University, A.B. in Philosophy from Bryn Mawr College.
Research Interests: Investigates the origins of Western philosophy, applying Ancient ethical insights to contemporary debates. Notable work includes analyzing Plato's Republic's moral epistemology and Aristotle's concept of eudaimonia. Her 2004 article on ethical internalism won the Philosophical Quarterly prize.
