John Pennington is an Associate Professor of Dance and Chair of the Dance Department at Pomona College, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. He is also affiliated with California State University, Long Beach, where he teaches dance, and serves as Artistic Director of the Pennington Dance Group and ARC Pasadena. He co-directs the Lewitzky Dance Gallery, reflecting his deep engagement with dance preservation and performance.
His educational background includes training at Northwestern University, a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, and an MFA from Hollins University. His career blends performance, education, and artistic leadership, with a 14-year tenure as a performer and master teacher with the Bella Lewitzky Dance Company.
John Pennington's research and artistic interests focus on contemporary dance, choreography, and dance education. He has been deeply involved in curriculum development and arts outreach, working with institutions such as the Los Angeles Unified School District, Fowler Museum, MOCA, and the Armand Hammer Museum. His work emphasizes accessibility and pedagogical innovation in dance.
His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and grants, including support from the Princess Grace Foundation, California Community Foundation, Goethe Institute, Durfee Foundation, Dance USA, and the Los Angeles County Arts Program. He was an Annenberg Scholar in Dance Education for Inner City Arts LA and has served on boards including the Los Angeles Dance Resource Center and Dancers Responding to AIDS.
