John P. Hanly serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the English Department at Monmouth University, teaching first-year composition and graduate/undergraduate courses in rhetoric history, rhetorical theory, and composition pedagogy. His office is located in The Great Hall Annex 23 with regular office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Dr. Hanly holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Louisville (2011) and an M.A. from the University of Chicago. His scholarly focus centers on historical and theoretical dimensions of rhetoric, with particular emphasis on gender dynamics, ethical persuasion, and 19th-century rhetorical practices.
Research interests span History of Rhetoric, Rhetorical Theory, Composition Theory, First-Year and Advanced College Writing, Narrative Theory, and Postmodern Ethical Theory. His work consistently examines alliance formation, ethical risk in pedagogy, and the intersection of gender with rhetorical practices across historical contexts.
Analysis of his 14 most recent publications (2007-2020) reveals dominant trends in feminist rhetorical history, 19th-century US social movements, and ethical dimensions of composition pedagogy.
