معرفی
John N. Mather (1943–2017) was a Full Professor at Princeton University's Mathematics Department and previously held roles as Associate Professor and Full Professor at Harvard University. He specialized in singularity theory, mechanics, and the chaotic behavior of mechanical systems, renowned for groundbreaking contributions like the Mather-Malgrange Preparation Theorem. His work reshaped understanding of dynamical systems and chaos.
Education: B.A. from Harvard University, Ph.D. from Princeton University (1967). Mather joined Princeton in 1974 after postdoctoral work at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. Despite his international acclaim, he remained modest, dedicating decades to editorial roles at the Annals of Mathematics and Princeton University Press's Annals of Mathematics Studies.
His research emphasized profound mathematical rigor, addressing open problems in singularity theory and establishing novel mechanisms for chaos in mechanical systems. Though his work earned global recognition, Mather is remembered for his humility and service to academia.
