معرفی
John Norman Mather (1942–2017) was a renowned mathematician at Princeton University, recognized for contributions to singularity theory, Hamiltonian dynamics, and dynamical systems. He received an honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) from ENS de Lyon in 2012.
Research Focus: His work included stability of smooth mappings, topological stability theory, and the development of Aubry–Mather theory. He explored the Painlevé conjecture via collinear four-body problem solutions and contributed to weak KAM theory's foundations.
Awards:
- John J. Carty Award (1978)
- George David Birkhoff Prize (2003)
- Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit (2000)
- Brouwer Medal (2014)
Legacy: Mather edited the Annals of Mathematics Studies and influenced fields like viscosity solutions and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. His work remains foundational in dynamical systems theory.
