John Munkhaugen is a Professor at the Department of Behavioral Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo. He serves as Head of Research in the Department of Medicine at Drammen Hospital. His academic career spans clinical medicine with specialization in general internal medicine (2019) and heart diseases (2021).

Professor Munkhaugen's research focuses on cardiovascular disease prevention with emphasis on behavioral aspects and patient perspectives. His work spans lifestyle interventions, adherence to preventive treatments, clinical and molecular research on lipid-lowering therapies (particularly statins), cardiovascular intervention studies, beta-blocker treatment after heart attack, development of psychological interventions for anxiety/depression/insomnia, and digital home monitoring of heart failure. His publication record demonstrates strong expertise in statin therapy, medication adherence, and psychological aspects of cardiovascular disease management.
His recent publications show consistent output in high-impact cardiology and pharmacology journals, with particular emphasis on statin therapy mechanisms, adherence measurement techniques, and psychological interventions for cardiac patients. The research output spans both clinical trials and mechanistic studies.

Professor Munkhaugen supervises 7 PhD candidates and 3 post-doctoral researchers. He leads the NORCOR (Norwegian Coronary Prevention) research group and co-leads the multinational BETAMI study. He serves on the steering committee for the nationwide NorEx study and is a member of the Ischemic Heart Disease research group at the University of Oslo. With over 50 national and 20 international collaborators, his research network is extensive.
His current professional roles include membership in the National Association for Public Health's Cardiovascular Council (2022-present), Deputy Chair of the Norwegian Cardiological Society's working group for preventive cardiology (2019-present), and board member of NKT for FH. He previously served as advisor to the Norwegian Medicines Agency (2022) and the Norwegian Directorate of Health (2020-2022).
