Dr. John Mcdermott is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester and a Clinical Genetics Specialty Registrar. He holds the distinction of being the UK’s first Academic Clinical Fellow in Genomic Medicine (2016). His work at the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine (MCGM) focuses on integrating pharmacogenomics into clinical practice. He leads the world’s first trial of a bedside genetic test to prevent neonatal hearing loss (PALOH) and collaborates on initiatives like the DEVOTE programme. He was awarded the 2018 NIHR Clinical Research Network Award for research contributions and the 2022 New Statesman Positive Impact in Healthcare Award.
Education includes a PhD (2024) and MSc (2020) from the University of Manchester, alongside medical and scientific qualifications. His expertise spans translational research, with projects funded by NIHR, Innovate UK, and others. Collaborations include MIT/Harvard Broad Institute and industry partnerships.
