John McCafferty is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge and affiliated with CITIID. A co-founder of Cambridge Antibody Technology (CAT, acquired by AstraZeneca), he co-invented antibody phage display technology (basis of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Sir Gregory Winter) and founded IONTAS and Maxion Therapeutics.
His research focuses on:
- Developing recombinant antibody therapeutics for snakebite envenomation (causing 100,000 annual deaths)
- Creating the KnotBody™ platform that fuses knottins with antibodies to overcome natural limitations (short half-life, manufacturing difficulties)
- Targeting autoimmune diseases via Kv1.3 voltage-gated channel inhibition
McCafferty's work bridges venom-derived ion channel modulators and antibody engineering to address previously intractable therapeutic challenges, with Maxion Therapeutics advancing his Kv1.3-focused autoimmunity program.
