John M. Fryxell is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph, affiliated with the College of Biological Science and the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario. As Executive Director of the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, he leads interdisciplinary research initiatives. His research focuses on behavioral ecology, consumer-resource dynamics, and predator-prey interactions, combining theoretical modeling with field studies in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Education: B.Sc. (1977) and Ph.D. (1985) from the University of British Columbia. His work spans Serengeti herbivores, boreal forest caribou, and Norwegian reindeer, examining movement patterns, habitat selection, and population dynamics. Collaborations include the Limnotron facility for aquatic mesocosm studies and the Food from Thought program addressing agricultural impacts on ecosystems.
Research interests include spatial food web dynamics, sustainable harvesting of populations, and the effects of climate change on biodiversity. He leads a lab (SSC 2405/2406) and collaborates with institutions like NTNU and the University of Oslo on applied ecological challenges. His applied work addresses bioeconomic dynamics of fisheries and conservation strategies for endangered species.
Advising and grants: Supervises graduate students (e.g., Sharon Wang, Rebecca Viejou) and research associates like Dr. Gustavo Betini. Collaborative projects include modeling movement ecology, predator-prey strategies, and ecosystem resilience under global change.
Labs/Teams: Fryxell Lab at the University of Guelph, contributing to the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario's initiatives and international partnerships in Norway and Tanzania.
