John M. Eiler is the Robert P. Sharp Professor of Geology and Geochemistry and Ted and Ginger Jenkins Leadership Chair at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He has held various positions at Caltech since 1994, including Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor since 2006. He currently serves as Division Chair for the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences (2024-) and holds leadership roles.
- Education:
- B.S. in Geology, University of Iowa (1989)
- M.S. in Geochemistry, University of Wisconsin (Madison) (1991)
- Ph.D. in Geochemistry, University of Wisconsin (Madison) (1994)
Research Interests:
Professor Eiler specializes in isotope geochemistry of light elements (H, C, N, O, S), focusing on planetary and geological processes. His work addresses the origin of igneous rocks, meteorites, planetary atmospheres, atmospheric chemistry, paleoclimate, and paleontology through isotopic analysis.
Publication Trends:
Recent articles highlight his expertise in clumped isotopes, light element fractionation, and applications to planetary science. Key topics include protoplanetary disk organic solids, sulfur isotope sources in the solar system, hydrogen isotope equilibrium in alkanes, Himalayan uplift via detrital carbonate analysis, and isotopic constraints on Precambrian fracture fluids and extraterrestrial organic compounds.
