Leon T. Silver

Leon T. "Lee" Silver (1925–2022) was a distinguished professor of geology and geochemistry at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), serving as the W. M. Keck Foundation Professor for Resource Geology from 1983 until his retirement in 1996. He held academic ranks including Assistant Professor (1955–62), Associate Professor (1962–65), and full Professor (1965–83) within the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences. His career spanned over four decades, marked by groundbreaking contributions to geochemistry, planetary science, and lunar geology.

Education: B.S. (University of Colorado, 1945), M.S. (University of New Mexico, 1948), Ph.D. (Caltech, 1955). Silver’s research pioneered stable isotope geochemistry and lunar sample analysis, notably through his involvement with NASA’s Apollo program. He trained Apollo astronauts in field geology, including crews for Apollo 13, 15, 16, and 17, and contributed to lunar mission planning, surface operations, and sample analysis.

Key achievements include advancing isotopic dating techniques, co-discovering the age of the Earth through meteorite analysis (via collaboration with Clair C. Patterson), and naming the lunar feature Silver Spur. He advised prominent students like Michael B. Duke and Tom McGetchin. Silver’s legacy includes federal advisory roles (e.g., Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee), leadership in scientific societies, and recognition through prestigious awards.
