John Lysaker is the William R. Kenan Professor of Philosophy at Emory University. He holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University (1995) and is based in the Department of Philosophy. His research spans ethics, philosophical psychology, the philosophy of art, and 19th–20th century continental/American philosophy, with specific projects on friendship, schizophrenia, self-experience, Cavell and music, and negative capability.

Recent publications focus on metacognition in psychosis, recovery-oriented treatments, and ethical dimensions of antipsychotic deprescribing. His work bridges philosophical inquiry with clinical practice, emphasizing narrative identity and the integration of lived experience in mental health care.
Current research explores the intersection of literature and mental health recovery, alongside theoretical inquiries into friendship and self-transformation. He contributes to BMC Psychiatry, Frontiers in Psychology, and the Journal of Speculative Philosophy.
