John Lutz

Dr. John Lutz is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Victoria's Faculty of Humanities. His research and teaching focus on British Columbia History, Pacific Northwest History, and the history of Indigenous-Settler Relations, emphasizing the importance of understanding local history as a foundation for environmental and social responsibility.

His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Best Article Prize in BC History (2024), Faculty of Humanities Outstanding Graduate Supervision and Mentorship Award (2023), and Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (2012). Dr. Lutz has supervised over 30 graduate students and pioneered community-engaged scholarship through projects like the Sto:lo Ethnohistory Field School.
