Dr. John L. Vitale is a Full Professor in the Schulich School of Education at Nipissing University, where he teaches music education and supervises graduate dissertations. He holds a PhD in Curriculum Studies from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on music pedagogy, ungrading practices, and challenging Eurocentric educational frameworks. He is also a professional bassist with over 1,200 performances internationally, including collaborations with Juno Award-winning artists like Robert Michaels and Liberty Silver.

- Teaching Experience: 15 years in post-secondary education, 14 years in Ontario's public and Catholic school boards, including 12 years as a secondary music teacher and Department Head at Victoria Park Collegiate Institute.

Recent work explores ungrading methodologies and the role of informal learning in music pedagogy. He has published over 40 articles in journals like Canadian Music Educator and presented at conferences in Finland, Italy, and the U.S.
Dr. Vitale’s teaching philosophy emphasizes creativity, risk-taking, and accessibility. He uses technology and social media to create engaging classroom environments and has been recognized with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2022-23).
He is also an advocate for community outreach through music, performing in educational and charitable events. His sabbatical in 2023-24 focused on developing online resources for music educators, including ukulele play-along materials for primary/junior classrooms.
