John Z. Kiss is a Professor at the Florida Institute of Technology within the College of Engineering and Science, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Science. He serves as Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
His research focuses on plant space biology, particularly the interplay between gravity and light responses in plants. Key areas include gravitropism, phototropism, and the role of red light in counteracting the effects of microgravity on plant growth. This work is critical for developing sustainable life-support systems for long-term space habitation.
He has led eight spaceflight projects in collaboration with NASA, the European Space Agency, and Roscosmos, advancing understanding of cellular signaling mechanisms in plant tropisms—directed movements in response to external stimuli.
