John Kirk is a faculty member at Bennington College, where he teaches courses in the history of American and Celtic traditional music, along with instrumental lessons in mandolin, fiddle, banjo, ukulele, and dulcimer. He has been affiliated with Bennington since 1998, joining as a full-time faculty member in 2020. Kirk is a multifaceted musician, singer, and educator, renowned for his contributions to traditional music performance and pedagogy.
His career includes residencies at institutions such as the Crane School of Music, the Academy of Culture in St. Petersburg, Texas State University, and Alfred University. As part of the U.S. State Department’s Rhythm Road program in 2011, he served as a cultural ambassador to Kosovo, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Turkey with Mountain Quickstep. Kirk has collaborated with notable artists like Pete Seeger, Jay Ungar, and the Dixie Chicks, and his music features prominently in Ken Burns’ documentary The West.
His research and creative work focus on preserving and innovating traditional music forms, blending historical performance practices with contemporary compositions. Kirk maintains an active presence in both academic and artistic communities, bridging education and performance through his teaching and global engagements.
