Prof. John Kilner is a Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London's Department of Materials (Faculty of Engineering). He previously held the B.C.H.Steele Professorship in Energy Materials and served as Head of the Department of Materials (2000–2006) and Dean of the Royal School of Mines (1998–2000). He is also a Professor at Kyushu University's I2CNER and advises institutions like CICenergiGUNE (Spain) and CeresPower Ltd (UK).

His research focuses on ionic/mixed-conducting ceramics for energy applications (e.g., fuel cells, oxygen separators, sensors) and surface/interfacial phenomena. Leadership roles include European Editor for Journal of Solid State Ionics and UK leader of the JSPS Core-to-Core Consortium SOIFIT. Notable awards include ISSI’s Senior Scientist Award (2024).
