John Kelsay is a distinguished academic serving as Bristol Distinguished Professor of Religion and Ethics and Distinguished Research Professor at Florida State University's Department of Religion, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His academic leadership includes roles as Department Chair (1996–2006, 2012–2015) and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (2008–2012). He holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia (1985), a D.Min. from Columbia Theological Seminary (1980), and a B.A. from Old Dominion University (1976).
His research focuses on comparative religious ethics, particularly the intersection of Islamic and Christian traditions with political ethics and the ethics of war. Notable works include Arguing the Just War in Islam (2007), Islam and War (1993), and co-authored texts like Human Rights and the Conflict of Cultures (1988). He has held prestigious fellowships, including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2002–2003) and Rockefeller Fellowship (2002–2003).
