John K. Hall serves as an Affiliate Research Professor at the University of New Hampshire's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM), specializing in geological mapping and marine geophysics. Retired after 35 years from the Geological Survey of Israel where he became the nation's first marine geophysicist in 1970, he founded the Israel National Bathymetric Survey and operates the research hovercraft R/H Sabvabaa from UNIS in Svalbard since 2008.
Education
- Ph.D. from Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, conducted via a drifting Arctic Ocean ice station
Research Focus
His expertise spans geological mapping, marine geophysics, and bathymetric analysis with emphasis on the Arctic Ocean and regional seas. Hall developed innovative mapping algorithms for inaccessible areas like the Alpha Ridge, utilizing marine geophysical tools aboard his hovercraft to advance understanding of seabed topography and geological formations.
Professional Contributions
- Founded American Friends of UNIS to support U.S. scientific research in Svalbard
- Author of 200+ publications including books, maps, and technical reports on bathymetry
- Conducted sabbatical as CCOM Visiting Scholar (2003-2004) at University of New Hampshire
Research Infrastructure
Operates the 13m Griffon 2000T hovercraft R/H Sabvabaa from UNIS (Svalbard), specifically engineered for Arctic geophysical surveys in extreme environments including ice-covered ocean regions.
