John Jupp is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Sussex's School of Law, Politics and Sociology. He is Co-founder and Director of the Sussex Terrorism and Extremism Research Network (STERN). His expertise lies in counter-terrorism policy, organized crime-terror linkages, and legal reforms in conflict/post-conflict states. He advises the UN on counter-terrorism matters and contributed to UNODC projects like the 'Strengthening Research and Evaluation Capacity on Linkages Between Organized Crime and Terrorism' initiative (2017–2019).
Research focuses include the crime-terror nexus, far-right terrorism, and victim protections in Afghanistan's legal system. He co-authored a UN manual on responses to xenophobic terrorism and published influential studies on Northern Ireland's crime-terror interaction models. His work bridges academic research with practical legal tools, such as the UNODC module on organized crime-terrorism linkages.
Teaching includes running Sussex's Family Law Clinic, providing free legal advice to local communities. Grants include ESRC/IDCF funding for Afghanistan victim protections (2017–2021). Collaborations with UNODC, RUSI, and OSCE highlight his international engagement in shaping counter-terrorism strategies and legal frameworks.
