John J. Maher

John J. Maher is the Thomas M. Wells & Kathy Dargo Professor at Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business, where he has served since 1985. He is a leading expert in Capital Markets, Accounting Information Systems, and Auditing, with a focus on debt markets and decision modeling. Maher has held leadership roles, including Department Head of Accounting and Information Systems (2016–2021) and Director of the ACIS Ph.D. program for 15 years. He has advised over 25 dissertation committees and is a three-time recipient of Pamplin’s Business Teaching Excellence Award.

Education: Ph.D. in Accounting from Pennsylvania State University, MBA and B.S. from University of Scranton.

Research Interests: Explore the intersection of accounting practices and financial markets, including earnings management, credit ratings, pension obligations, and auditor specialization. His work has been published in top journals like The Accounting Review and Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory.

Awards: Recognized as Pamplin’s Outstanding Faculty in Doctoral Education (2009) and consistently honored for teaching excellence. Active in editorial boards and peer review across major accounting journals.

Community Engagement: Volunteered extensively with youth sports, served on a Recreation Advisory Board for 20 years, and contributed to Habitat for Humanity. Active in church roles, including Finance Council and Sunday lector.
