John J. Kopchick is a Distinguished Professor & Goll-Ohio Eminent Scholar in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He leads research at the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Aging and the Nanoscale Quantum Phenomena Institute (NQPI). His expertise spans molecular endocrinology, growth hormone biology, and translational medicine.
Education: BS/MS in Biology/Chemistry (Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 1972–1975), PhD in Biomedical Sciences (University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1980), and postdoctoral training at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology.
Research focuses on growth hormone (GH) receptor antagonists, GH’s role in aging/cancer, and translational applications. His group pioneered Somavert (Pegvisomant), an FDA-approved drug for acromegaly. Over 430 publications and patents underpin his global influence.
Awards include the British Endocrine Society Transatlantic Award (2011) and the Endocrine Society Laureate Award (2019). He has advised 33 PhD, 4 DO/PhD, and 14 MS candidates, plus 45 postdocs and 300+ undergraduates.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Aging, leading projects on GH signaling, diabetes, and age-related diseases.
