Darlene Berryman, Ph.D., RD, LD is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. She serves as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation and Interim Director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Aging. Her work is centered on obesity, nutrition, and metabolic health, with strong interdisciplinary affiliations including The Diabetes Institute and the Collaborative on Aging.
Education:
- B.S. in Biology, University of Virginia, 1988
- Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences, Cornell University, 1994
Certifications: Registered Dietitian (RD), Licensed Dietitian (LD)
Dr. Berryman's research focuses on the complex role of adipose (fat) tissue in obesity, metabolism, and aging. She investigates how growth hormone and dietary macronutrient composition influence fat distribution, metabolic function, and progression to diabetes. Her work emphasizes that societal factors—such as environmental temperature—may unexpectedly impact fat tissue and obesity risk. She utilizes unique mouse models in collaboration with Dr. John Kopchick to explore the paradox of healthy obesity and longevity.
Dr. Berryman has held leadership roles including Executive Director of The Diabetes Institute at Ohio University for six years. She actively contributes to aging research through Ohio University's Collaborative on Aging. Her administrative roles reflect her commitment to research innovation and interdisciplinary science. She has secured research funding and leads institutional initiatives to advance biomedical discovery, particularly in metabolic and age-related diseases.
