John I. Carruthers is an Associate Professor in City and Regional Planning and Director of Graduate Studies in Regional Science at Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. He specializes in sustainable urban development, economic geography, and environmental quality of life analysis. His research evaluates environmental remediation projects in the Puget Sound region and the value of public education in Seoul’s metropolitan area.
Education: PhD in Urban Planning (2001, University of Washington), MS in Urban and Regional Planning (1998, University of Arizona), BA in Political Science (1996, Hunter College, CUNY).
Research Interests: Urban sustainability, geospatial analysis, regional economic impacts, and land-use policies. His work bridges normative planning principles with empirical regional science methodologies.
Awards & Recognition:
- George Washington Award (2019) – GW’s highest academic honor
- APA National Capital Area Chapter’s Distinguished Leadership Award (2016)
Grants & Professional Service: Led GW’s Sustainable Urban Planning Program to PAB accreditation. Served on the North American Regional Science Council and Western Regional Science Association board. Directed a $75k project analyzing green space benefits in Seoul (2015).
