Professor John Holloway is a Professor of Allergy and Respiratory Genetics at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Medicine, and serves as Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research). He leads the Respiratory Genetics Group, focusing on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying asthma and allergies. His work integrates clinical observations with population genetics and epigenetics, emphasizing early-life environmental influences. Key affiliations include the School of Human Development & Health, Institute for Life Sciences, and NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre.
Education: B.Sc. Biochemistry (Otago University, 1992), Ph.D. in asthma genetics (Otago University, 1997). His research spans transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, prenatal programming of respiratory diseases, and international collaborations (e.g., RHINESSA study with University of Bergen). He chairs the Collegium International Allergologicum (USA, 2022–2026) and reviews for Clinical Epigenetics.
Research interests include asthma heterogeneity, DNA methylation, and the preconception environment’s role in disease susceptibility. Notable projects involve the Isle of Wight Birth Cohort and the UNICORN consortium. Awards include Fellowships from the European Respiratory Society and the Higher Education Academy.
Teaching involves molecular cell biology in the undergraduate Medicine program and MSc Allergy modules. He supervises PhD students and contributes to interdisciplinary research initiatives.
