John Hoehn serves as Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University's College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. His academic career spans decades of impactful research at the intersection of economic theory and environmental policy applications.
Dr. Hoehn's research expertise encompasses:
- Mathematical applications in microeconomics and choice theory
- Spatial economics and differences in wages, housing prices, and nonmarket amenities
- Valuation methods for environmental resources
- Natural resource damage assessment methodologies
- Estimation of benefits, costs, and changes in well-being

His scholarly work has achieved significant real-world impact through environmental policy applications, particularly in natural resource damage assessment cases including the Exxon Valdez-Prince William Sound oil spill, DOJ-NOAA Blackbird Mine assessment, Bunker Hill Mine-Coeur d'Alene River analysis, and Michigan Department of Natural Resources Kalamazoo River assessment.
Dr. Hoehn has held leadership positions in major professional organizations:
