John Hayes is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Anthropology and Philosophy at Augusta University's Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. His expertise spans 19th-20th century US history, particularly the American South, with a focus on religion, civil rights, and social movements. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Georgia (2007), an MTS in Theology from Duke University (2000), and a BA in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Wake Forest University (1995).
His research includes his award-winning book Hard, Hard Religion: Interracial Faith in the Poor South (UNC Press, 2017) and an upcoming project on the 1970 Augusta rebellion. Awards include the 2022 Historian Award from the Lucy Craft Laney Museum and participation in the Southern Historical Association's Second Book Writers Workshop (2024).
Teaching interests include US and Southern history, with courses such as Georgia History and the Long Civil Rights Movement. He actively serves on numerous committees, including the Pamplin College Curriculum Committee (Chair), Equity Task Force, and Augusta African American Historical Society (Vice President). His public service includes advising the DOJ/FBI on cold case investigations and providing historical context for legal cases.
