John M. Giggie is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Alabama and Director of the Summersell Center for the Study of the South. He holds a PhD from Princeton University (1998). His research focuses on Southern History, Religious History, U.S. History, and the History of Race, with a particular emphasis on the Civil Rights Movement and African-American experiences. Current projects explore the intersection of civil rights and Southern identity. His publications include Bloody Tuesday (Oxford UP, 2024), analyzing Tuscaloosa's civil rights struggles, and co-edited works on World War I's impact in the South and thematic approaches to American history.
Dr. Giggie's research interests also encompass American religion and the social dynamics of the modern South. He directs the Summersell Center, advancing interdisciplinary studies of Southern culture and history.
