John Hart

Professor John Hart is a Professor in Biosensor and Electroanalytical Sciences at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the Centre for Research in Biosciences and the Institute of Bio-sensing Technology. With over 20 years of experience, he has pioneered research in disposable screen-printed electrochemical sensors and biosensors.

His research interests encompass:

• Design and development of screen-printed electrochemical sensors and biosensors for biomedicine, agri-food, environmental, and gas detection applications.
• Immobilisation of biorecognition elements (enzymes, antibodies, molecularly imprinted polymers) onto transducers.
• Voltammetric techniques for determining compounds of biological and environmental importance.
• HPLC with electrochemical detection for trace analysis of vitamins, coenzymes, and drugs.

Professor Hart has been honored with the following awards and fellowships:

• Chartered Chemist (CChem)
• Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC)
• Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)

He has secured substantial research funding from MAFF/LINK, DEFRA/LINK, CBRN, and the Environment Agency. His industrial collaborations, particularly with The Gwent Group, have led to novel screen-printing inks and electroanalytical instruments. Professor Hart serves as an editor for the International Journal of Analytical Chemistry and referees for multiple journals.

He is an active member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, currently serving as Honorary Secretary of the Electroanalytical Sensing Systems Group, Analytical Division.
