R. John Hansman, Jr. is the T. Wilson Professor of Aeronautics & Astronautics at MIT, leading the Division of Humans and Automation and directing the MIT International Center for Air Transportation. His research focuses on applying information technology to aerospace systems, with 6 patents and over 250 technical publications.
Education: A.B. in Physics from Cornell University (1976), S.M. in Physics from MIT (1980), and a Ph.D. in Physics, Meteorology, Aeronautics & Astronautics, and Electrical Engineering from MIT (1982).
Research emphasizes aviation safety, air traffic management, and flight testing. He has over 5,800 hours of pilot experience across airplanes, helicopters, and sailplanes, including meteorological and engineering flight tests.
Leadership roles include chairing the FAA Research Engineering & Development Advisory Committee (REDAC) and serving on national/international advisory committees.
Honors include AIAA Fellow, NAE membership, and awards such as the FAA Excellence in Aviation Award.
