John H. Miller is Professor of Economics and Social Science in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, where he served as Department Head from 2002 to 2014. He concurrently holds an External Faculty position at the Santa Fe Institute, serving on their Science Steering Committee since becoming their first postdoctoral fellow in 1988.
His academic background includes:
- Ph.D. in Economics, University of Michigan (1988)
Miller's research centers on complex adaptive social systems and behavioral economics, utilizing agent-based modeling to investigate decision-making processes, institutional evolution, and human-AI interaction. His interdisciplinary work spans economics, psychology, evolutionary biology, and computer science, with specific focus on risk assessment, cultural dynamics, and strategic behavior in complex environments.
Recent publications (2021-2025) reveal a pronounced shift toward human-AI collaboration in complex decision contexts, examining cognitive biases during human-agent teamwork, experimental methodologies for choice architecture, and network dynamics in cultural evolution. His work consistently bridges theoretical modeling with empirical validation across social, economic, and biological domains.
He has held significant leadership roles including Department Head at Carnegie Mellon and continues active research through affiliations with both institutions.
