John Greyson is an Associate Professor in the Film Department at York University's School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD). A prominent queer filmmaker, video artist, and activist, he has been with York since 2005. His work spans feature films, short videos, and research-creation projects addressing queer activism, HIV/AIDS, and media theory. He holds a fellowship from the Royal Society of Canada and has received accolades including the 2000 Toronto Arts Award and the 2007 Bell Award in Video Art.
Greyson's research includes the Vital Transgressions and Viral Interventions initiatives, commissioning artists to explore queer activism and HIV narratives. He collaborates on projects like the Future Cinema Lab and contributes to anti-censorship and AIDS advocacy. His teaching spans Canada, the US, Cuba, and South Africa, and he is completing a PhD in Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto.
Key roles include board memberships with organizations like the Inside Out Film/Video Festival and LIFT. His films have screened globally, earning awards such as the Teddy Award for Fig Trees (2008) and the Genie Award for Lilies (1996). His work blends artistic innovation with social critique, focusing on queer identities and marginalized voices.
