Dr. John Grable is the Athletic Association Endowed Professor of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Georgia's College of Family and Consumer Sciences, within the Department of Financial Planning, Housing and Consumer Economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Resource Management/Personal Financial Planning from Virginia Tech (1997), an MBA from Clarkson University (1988), and a B.S. in Economics/Business Administration from the University of Nevada (1987). His research focuses on financial risk tolerance assessment, behavioral financial planning, and evidence-based clinical assessments. He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and has authored/co-authored over 150 refereed papers, textbooks, and guides on financial planning and counseling. Dr. Grable has served as editor of Financial Services Review (2023–present), co-editor of Financial Planning Review (2017–2022), and founding editor of Journal of Personal Finance (2011–2006). He has received prestigious awards including the Financial Therapy Association Hall of Fame (2023) and the Mid-Career Award from the American Council on Consumer Interests (2011). His editorial and outreach roles include leadership in professional organizations like the Financial Planning Association and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.
His research emphasizes applied solutions for consumers and financial professionals, including studies on financial literacy, risk tolerance calibration, and financial help-seeking behavior. He leads the Financial Planning Performance Lab, conducting evidence-based research and advising students in capstone courses like FHCE 5250 and FHCE 8025E. Current projects explore financial risk tolerance assessment and clinical evaluation of financial planning standards. Dr. Grable's work bridges academia and practice, with a focus on practical tools for financial advisors and policymakers.
