John Goering is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the City University of New York (CUNY), with additional affiliation at the Ralph Bunche Institute at The Graduate Center where he co-directs a Mellon Foundation grant focused on international and domestic human rights policy interfaces.
He earned his Ph.D. in sociology and demography from Brown University, establishing foundational expertise in demographic analysis and social structures relevant to urban studies.
Dr. Goering's research centers on housing equity, racial segregation, and urban policy interventions, with seminal contributions to the Moving to Opportunity (MTO) social experiment analysis. His work critically examines federal housing policies, mortgage discrimination, and neighborhood revitalization strategies through publications like Choosing a Better Life? Evaluating the Moving to Opportunity Experiment (2003) and Moving to Opportunity: The Story of an American Experiment to Fight Ghetto Poverty (2010), revealing structural barriers in deconcentrating urban poverty.
His professional engagement includes editorial roles for Urban Affairs Review, Housing Studies, and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, alongside significant service on American Sociological Association committees (1992-2001). Dr. Goering leverages his policy experience from directing HUD research initiatives and advising the Clinton White House Initiative on Race to inform current HUD consultation work on housing litigation and research evaluation.
