Professor John Gillies is a renowned Shakespearean scholar and Professor in the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies at the University of Essex. He holds a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degree from the University of New England (UNE), Australia, followed by studies at the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham, and Oxford. His research focuses on Shakespearean literature, cultural history, and cross-cultural performance adaptations, particularly Chinese Shakespearean works from the 1980s. His seminal work Shakespeare and the Geography of Difference explores Shakespeare’s global imagination through cartography.
