Professor Lanier is widely recognized as a pioneer in the study of modern appropriations of Shakespeare across all media. His groundbreaking book, Shakespeare and Modern Popular Culture (Oxford University Press, 2002), established foundational parameters for one of the most dynamic fields in contemporary Shakespeare studies. His research spans Renaissance literature, performance studies, film adaptation, and the cultural reception of Shakespeare worldwide, with particular focus on how Shakespeare's works intersect with popular culture, race, gender, and contemporary social issues.
An analysis of Lanier's recent publications reveals a consistent trajectory toward examining Shakespeare's global reach and contemporary relevance. His work increasingly focuses on digital adaptations, social media interpretations, and reparative approaches to Shakespeare that address the traumas of socially-marginalized groups. The scholarship demonstrates sophisticated engagement with adaptation theory, film studies, and cultural criticism, while maintaining deep textual knowledge of Shakespeare's works and their historical contexts.
