Professor John Gareth Morris CBE DPhil FIBiol FLSW FRS (1932-2023) was a distinguished academic in microbiology, holding the Chair of Microbiology at UCW Aberystwyth (now University of Wales, Aberystwyth) from 1971 until his retirement in 2000. He was later an Emeritus Professor. His research focused on anaerobic bacteria, particularly Clostridia, and their applications in biofuel production and biotransformations. He emphasized interdisciplinary education, authoring a seminal textbook A Biologist’s Physical Chemistry.
Education: Bridgend Grammar School; BSc Biochemistry at Leeds University; DPhil in Microbial Physiology at Oxford University (Trinity College) under D.D. Woods.
Research Interests: Microbial physiology, anaerobic bacteria, biofuels, and microbial energetics. He pioneered the Microbiology BSc course at Aberystwyth, emphasizing laboratory and fieldwork. His group became globally recognized for studies on Clostridia and dairy microbiology.
Awards: FRS (1988), CBE (1994), Honorary Member of Microbiology Society (1997), and FLSW (2011). He held leadership roles in national committees, including Chair of the Biological Sciences Committee at the Science and Engineering Research Council (1978-81) and the University Grants Committee (1981-86).
Legacy: Co-founded the Gregynog Microbiology Meetings (1971), fostering collaboration across Welsh universities. Retained active engagement with academia post-retirement, mentoring colleagues and staying updated on departmental advancements.
