Dr. John Filling is a Lecturer in Political Philosophy at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the School of Public Policy and Department of Political Science. He also serves as Deputy Director of Education for the Department, focusing on Widening Participation initiatives. Previously, he held roles at UCL as a Teaching Fellow and Programme Director of the MA in Legal and Political Theory (2012–2015). Before returning to UCL, he was Lecturer then Assistant Professor in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge (2015–2021), and remains a Bye-Fellow at King's College, Cambridge.
Education: B.A. in PPE, M.Phil., and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford, where his doctoral work was supervised by G.A. Cohen. He was also an Andrew Fraser Junior Research Fellow at St John's College, Oxford (2008–2012).
Research focuses on analytical political philosophy (structural injustice, domination), post-Kantian philosophy (Hegel, Marx), and recovering marginalized voices in philosophy (e.g., Ottobah Cugoano, Anna Julia Cooper). His work critiques contemporary republican theory and engages radical traditions like feminism and critical race theory.
Teaching includes modules on political thought, justice, and the ethics of social media. He supervises PhD students in political philosophy, history of political thought, and post-Kantian philosophy.
