John Fass is a Senior Lecturer in MA User Experience Design at the London College of Communication, part of University of the Arts London. He also serves as a Course Leader for the MA User Experience Design program and previously led the BA Hons Information and Interface Design program. Additionally, he holds positions as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow and Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art.
His educational background includes a PhD from the Royal College of Art (2018, AHRC funded), an MRes with Distinction in Information Environments from London College of Communication, and a BA (Hons) in Photography, Film, Video and Animation from West Surrey College of Art and Design.
Fass's research focuses on digital experiences, technology production cultures, and the politics of digital interfaces. His work explores how digital interfaces mediate human perceptions of self, friends, and the world, with particular attention to the power dynamics between service providers and users. He employs design methods to elicit personal interpretations of digital experiences, such as having people draw comic book versions of their browser history.
His research output spans topics including digital news, internet culture, citation methods, data visualization, and the relationship between UX designers and machine learning data scientists. His most recent work involves designerly abstractions and sensitizing concepts in the context of digital experiences.

Fass has presented research at major conferences including CHI, NordiCHI, DIS, and IEEE Vis. He has extensive professional experience, having worked with clients such as Google, Arup, TED, Universal Music, and IBM. His work has been exhibited at institutions including The Photographers Gallery, FACT, Moderna Museet, and Bozar. He has also been a visiting lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture, Leicester University, ECAL+EPFL, and Bauhaus Oassau.
