John F. Shirley is a Professor in the Music Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, where he coordinates the Composition for New Media program and previously chaired the department for seven years.

His research pioneers immersive audio technologies, including binaural VR experiences like the 360-degree Borderless project with head-tracking Dolby Atmos audio. He explores electronic music composition through Max/MSP, DSP applications, and innovative harmonica/guitar techniques across electroacoustic, rock, and jazz genres.
Dr. Shirley founded the Contemporary Electronic Ensemble, Metal Ensemble, and Blues ensemble—performing four shows per semester downtown—and led NASM accreditation of all music programs. An active performer with John Shirley and The Lifers, he also produces tech demonstrations and music videos on his YouTube channel.
