John Ewing is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Chair of the International Master of Environmental Policy (iMEP) program. He holds a primary appointment in the Environmental Natural Sciences Division and a secondary appointment at the Nicholas Institute of Energy, Environment & Sustainability. His roles include directing energy and climate policy research at the Nicholas Institute and affiliating with the Sanford School of Public Policy.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Environmental Security from Bond University (Australia), B.A. in Political Science from the College of Charleston.
Research focuses on global energy transitions, climate policy, and sustainable development, particularly in Asia. Recent work emphasizes low-carbon development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and U.S.-China environmental collaboration. His publications analyze electricity sector investments, supply chain resilience, and policy frameworks for achieving net-zero targets.
Grants include funding from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, NORC at the University of Chicago, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. He has held prior roles at the Asia Society Policy Institute and Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, focusing on Asian sustainability and carbon market cooperation.
Collaborates with Duke Kunshan University to advance environmental research and policy education. Active in media commentary on energy and climate issues.
