John Elder served as a faculty member at Middlebury College from 1973 until his retirement in 2010, holding appointments in English, American Literatures, and Environmental Studies. He was appointed a non-departmental College Professor in 2007. His teaching specialties included American nature writing, English Romantic Poetry, and Japan’s haiku tradition. He also taught at the Bread Loaf School of English across multiple campuses. Post-retirement, he co-authored multimedia projects like the website 'Picking Up the Flute,' exploring traditional Irish music with his wife Rita.
His scholarly interests expanded into community-based education and Vermont's natural history, reflected in books like Reading the Mountains of Home and Picking Up the Flute. He actively participates in environmental initiatives and operates a sugarbush with his family in Starksboro.
John currently resides in Bristol, Vermont, where he continues writing and musical projects. His professional website tracks ongoing endeavors in literature and environmental advocacy.
