معرفی
John E. Cronan is an Alumni Professor of Microbiology and Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. His research focuses on lipid metabolism, biotin/lipoic acid biosynthesis, and microbial physiology. He holds a B.A. in Biology from California State University (1965) and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Irvine (1968), followed by postdoctoral training in Biochemistry at Washington University School of Medicine (1968–1970).
Research Interests
Dr. Cronan investigates mechanisms regulating bacterial lipid composition and the biosynthesis of essential cofactors like biotin and lipoic acid. His work combines genetic, biochemical, and structural approaches to understand how bacteria adapt membrane lipid composition to environmental changes and pathogenicity. Recent studies include:
- Novel pathways in Mycobacteria and Pseudomonas for biotin precursor synthesis
- Regulation of fatty acid elongation in diverse bacterial species
- Enzymatic mechanisms of lipoic acid attachment to mitochondrial proteins
Awards & Honors
- Member, National Academy of Sciences
- Fellow, American Academy of Microbiology
- National Institutes of Health MERIT Award
- Microbiology Alumni Endowed Professorship
Labs & Collaborations
His lab collaborates on projects involving antibiotic development targeting lipid synthesis pathways and studies of metabolic adaptations in pathogenic bacteria.
