John E Cronan is a Professor of Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. His roles include Microbiology Alumni Professor and holds the Microbiology Alumni Endowed Professorship. Cronan earned a B.A. in Biology from California State University (1965), a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Irvine (1968), and completed postdoctoral training in Biochemistry at Washington University School of Medicine (1968–1970).
His research focuses on lipid metabolism regulation and synthesis of biotin/lipoic acid in bacteria, primarily using Escherichia coli as a model. Key areas include membrane phospholipid composition, antibiotic target mechanisms, and comparative bacterial pathways. Recent work explores fatty acid synthesis in gram-positive bacteria and coenzyme attachment mechanisms.
Notable awards include membership in the National Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, and the NIH MERIT Award. His lab investigates practical applications of bacterial lipid research, such as antibiotic development and understanding pathogen biology.
Labs/Teams: Cronan’s lab integrates genetic, biochemical, and structural approaches to study microbial physiology and enzyme systems. Current projects address lipid metabolism regulation and coenzyme biosynthesis in diverse bacterial species.
