Dr. John E. Burke is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Science. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of lipid signaling pathways and their roles in human diseases like cancer, aging, and infections. He employs advanced techniques such as Cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, and HDX-MS to study protein-lipid interactions and develop therapeutics.
Education: BSc from UC Berkeley, PhD from UC San Diego. Research interests include phosphoinositide signaling in viral infections, cancer initiation, and healthy aging; structural biology-based drug design targeting malaria and viral infections; and advancing HDX-MS methodologies. His lab emphasizes training students in structural biology, mass spectrometry, and protein biochemistry.
Key projects involve four inter-related themes: viral/parasitic infection mechanisms, lipid signaling in aging/cancer, structural approaches for therapeutics, and HDX-MS innovation. The Burke Lab is located in Petch Bldg Room 236, collaborating with academic and biopharmaceutical partners to translate findings into clinical applications.
