John Duggan is the Don Alonzo Watson Professor of Political Science and a Professor of Economics at the University of Rochester. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Economics within the School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on Economic Theory, Political Economy, and Social Choice Theory, with particular attention to electoral systems, political accountability, and strategic decision-making. Duggan earned his PhD in Economics from the California Institute of Technology in 1995.
His academic work spans topics such as dynamic legislative processes, voting mechanisms, and the interplay between lobbying and policy outcomes. Notable contributions include analyses of subgame-perfect equilibria in political games, electoral accountability frameworks, and the theoretical underpinnings of democratic deliberation.
Recent publications (2021–2024) emphasize dynamic electoral models, policy extremism in repeated elections, and the role of delegation in accountability mechanisms. His work often employs game-theoretic models to explore strategic interactions in political and economic contexts.
