John Dowling

John Dowling is a distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. With a career spanning over six decades, he has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the vertebrate retina as an accessible part of the central nervous system. Though he has closed his laboratory, he remains actively engaged in research, currently collaborating with Professor Jeff Lichtman and colleagues at the University of Washington to reconstruct the human retinal fovea using connectomic methods.

Dowling's research interests focus on retinal mechanisms, with particular emphasis on retinal cells' structure, function, pharmacology, genetics, and synaptic interactions. His work bridges neuroscience and vision science, exploring how understanding retinal mechanisms provides insights into neural mechanisms throughout the brain. He has pioneered the use of zebrafish as a model organism for studying visual system development and function.

His publication record demonstrates a consistent trajectory from fundamental retinal physiology to more complex systems neuroscience, with recent work focusing on vision restoration and retinal disease mechanisms. Currently, Dowling is working with Professor Jeff Lichtman's team to reconstruct the human retinal fovea using thousands of tissue sections. This ambitious project aims to understand the structural basis of high-acuity vision and could provide critical insights for treating age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of legal blindness in the Western world.
