John-Demian (JD) Sauer is a Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on host-pathogen interactions, particularly using Listeria monocytogenes as a model system to study intracellular bacterial infections and immune responses.
- Research Themes: Bacterial pathogenesis, innate immune recognition, virulence mechanisms, glutathione metabolism, and immunotherapeutic applications
- Laboratory Focus: Identifying bacterial and host factors during infection, developing novel antimicrobials, and understanding immune signaling pathways
The lab employs genetic approaches (transposon mutagenesis) and murine infection models to dissect bacterial metabolism and immune response dynamics. Current projects include investigating c-di-AMP regulation and its impact on virulence gene expression.
- Grants: NIH R01 AI137070 and R35 GM147519
- Lab Members: Matt Freeman, Noah Eral, Kevin Parducho (postdoc), Abby DeBrine (graduate student)
